Four ways urgency gets faked.
Countdown timer
Often resets when you refresh or come back the next day. A deadline that never arrives isn’t urgency, it’s decoration.
“Only 2 left”
Frequently shows the same number regardless of demand. HAULS is designed to check it against what the price has actually done, not what the badge claims.
“47 people viewing”
Rarely tied to a real, live visitor count. There’s usually no way for a shopper to verify it at all.
Flash sale banner
A “sale” that runs continuously isn’t temporary. Price history shows how long a “limited-time” price has actually lasted.
Why this matters
This isn’t a nuisance. Regulators call it what it is.
India’s consumer protection authority explicitly bans this. The CCPA’s Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023 name “False Urgency” as one of 13 prohibited practices, defined as showing a product as more scarce or time-limited than it actually is.CCPA, 2023
It’s already been enforced here. SpiceJet was fined ₹1 lakh for fake countdown timers on its booking site, and a coaching platform was fined ₹3 lakh for a misleading 24-hour countdown, both under India’s dark-pattern rules.CCPA, 2026
A 2024 investigation tracked 20 Etsy listings using “sale ends in” countdown timers. 16 of them, 80%, simply reset to a new countdown the moment the clock hit zero. The price never changed.PIRG, 2024
A 2022 to 2023 sweep of 399 online stores across the EU found 148 of them, about 37%, using at least one dark pattern, and 42 specifically used fake countdown timers showing false deadlines to purchase.EU Commission, 2023
