Real discount calculator
A â40% offâ badge compares todayâs price with a list price the seller chose. This calculator compares it with the price you actually saw before the sale. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How it is calculated
Advertised discount = (list price â todayâs price) Ă· list price. Saving against the earlier price = (price before the sale â todayâs price) Ă· price before the sale. The gap between the two is how much of the badge comes from the list price alone. A gap of 15 points or more is flagged as âworth a closer lookâ, and 5 to 15 as moderate. These cut-offs are our own rule of thumb, not a legal test, and a flag is not a finding that anyone did anything wrong.
Example: list price âč2,000, today âč1,200, and the lowest price you saw in the last 30 days was âč1,250. The badge says 40% off, your saving is 4%, a gap of 36 points. See MRP vs selling price for why the list price can sit so high.
Discount claim checklist
- Write down the price today and the list price shown next to it.
- Find an earlier price: a screenshot, your own notes, Amazonâs in-app price history graph, or a third-party tracker. Note the date.
- Run the numbers above. A saving much smaller than the badge means the list price is doing the work.
- Compare the final price on another store for the same model, after offers. See how to compare prices across stores.
- Wait a day if the âonly 2 leftâ or a timer is pushing you. See urgency cues on Indian shopping sites.
What it cannot tell you
The calculator only does arithmetic on the numbers you type. It cannot know what the price really was, so the result is only as good as the earlier price you entered. The HAULS beta does this comparison from prices it has observed while you browse, and says how many days it is based on. The beta runs on desktop Chrome, Edge or Brave.
